What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a titanium bolt fixed into the jaw bone. It is used to support one or more false teeth. In practice, both false teeth, support pivots are called implants.
Implants are safe? For how long?
The dental implant is tested and represents a very safe treatment. 90% of modern implants last up to 15 years.
Can implants be used to replace missing teeth?
This depends on the condition of the jaw bone. Your dentist will perform some special tests that will assess the amount of bone existence. If bone is not sufficient or if it is not healthy enough the implant without bone graft will be impossible.
Do implants hurt?
Placing the implant requires a small operation. This can be done under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. You will not feel any pain at that time, but you will feel a minor discomfort a few days after surgery. This discomfort may be caused by the stitching and represents a part of the normal process of healing.
How long does the treatment last?
Your dentist can give you a treatment planning before starting it. Usually, the permanent teeth are set at two to six months after placing the dental implants. This period is required in order for the implants to integrate into the jaw bone. This takes at least 2 months if the lower jaw and 6 months if the upper jaw. Sometimes the dental implants may be sufficiently stable and the artificial teeth can be fixed sooner. If you have one, two or three teeth replaced, meantime you get a temporary restoration. If you have the complete set of permanent teeth, they can be worn during the healing period once they have been modified during surgery.
Is cleaning the artificial teeth difficult?
Cleaning the artificial teeth is more difficult than cleaning the natural teeth. However, cleaning is required once every 6 months at the dentist.
If I had gum disease when I had natural teeth, artificial teeth are likely to suffer the same?
Yes, if they are not taken care of properly. If you keep them clean and if you do not smoke, then you will have no problem.
What happens if the dental implant does not integrate into the jaw bone?
This happens very rarely. If the dental implant is weakened during the healing period or immediately thereafter, it is easily detached, and the healing is done properly. Once the jaw has healed, another implant can be inserted or the dentist can make a dental bridge using the implanted artificial teeth that have been integrated.
Is this treatment expensive?
Unfortunately, yes. However, in many cases, the cost of the treatment is only slightly higher than conventional treatments with bridges and crowns. There are advantages. A dental implant that replaces a single tooth eliminates the need for sanding next to it for bridges to be supported by the Crown. Because of their movements, normal prosthesis causes difficulties in speaking and eating. Instead, the teeth attached to implants do not create such problems.
