Medical tourism in Jordan

Medical tourism in Jordan became in some years the main focus of attention of the Near and Middle East, because it combines a quality service at a reassuring sociocultural context (home, language) for families accompanying patients and affordable prices.
According to the Jordanian Ministry of Health, between 100,000 and 120,000 people a year come for treatment in Jordan, mainly from Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and the countries of the region (Gulf). Jordan wants to compete Tunisia for medical tourism regarding  the Algerians because many of them choose medical tourism services. This type of tourism generates about $ 700 million per year.
In general, the Jordanian health system is particularly well developed compared to those of its neighbors. Jordan has 70 GP care centers, 236 centers of rural health care, 378 primary health care centers and 431 maternity centers and child care, according to 2009 figures. The kingdom has 14,674 physicians, or 24.5 doctors per 10 000 inhabitants and 11 355 hospital beds, 18 beds per 10 000 inhabitants.
The two hospitals under the Ministry of Health, who are the most disadvantaged in terms of equipment and personnel, represents 38% of available beds (4,358 beds).
The 11 military hospitals run by the Jordanian army under the banner of “Royal Medical Services” represent 19% of capacity (2131 beds), while the two university hospitals in Amman and Irbid King Abdullah University 9% beds (1,013 beds).
The private sector, which provides 34% of available beds (3,853 beds), is mainly oriented toward specialties such as cardiovascular surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology and obstetrics cosmetic surgery.
