Rhinoplasty can be simply defined as a nose job. It falls under the broad umbrella of plastic surgery and is concerned with the reconstruction, restructuring or enhancement of an individual’s nose. This rhinoplasty procedure can remove crooks, bumps, or asymmetry from the nose in addition to manipulating its size. These problems fixed by a rhinoplasty can be present since birth, or they arise due to accidents later in life. Individuals who are unhappy with the shape of their nose, whatever the cause, can resort to this plastic surgery procedure to fix their problem and gain a positive self-image.
How a nose job works:
There are three types of specialists who can perform this surgery – otolaryngologist, maxillofacial surgeon or an expert plastic surgeon. During the procedure, cuts are made on the inside of the nose so that surgeon can manipulate the structure of the cartilage and bones. These cuts are made with a technique that ensures the absence of any markings or scars after surgery. Once the incisions have been made, the cartilage or bone may be altered either by removing small portions of it or by adding extra tissue to it. After achieving the desired shape, the outer skin is once again made to cover the exposed bone and cartilage. To make sure that the new shape sets in properly, support is provided to the nose in the form of a splint. Rhinoplasty is a fairly brief surgery that does not require more than a night’s stay at the hospital, and that too is quite rare. A local or general anesthetic is provided to the patient undergoing the surgery.
What to expect from a rhinoplasty:
The end result of a properly conducted rhinoplasty can grant you the nose you have always been dreaming of, but before that can happen, you will have to go through some inconveniences as your nose heals.Rhinoplasty, as with all other surgeries, has temporary side effects, and it is important for patients to know what to expect. First off, the supports provided to the nose can be removed only one week after the surgery, so the patient can rest assured that s/he won’t be irked by that for long. However, the general soreness and puffiness that result due to the surgery last for longer than that. Cold compresses are highly recommended to alleviate the aching if it becomes too painful. Expect this stage to last for around a fortnight. For a few days after rhinoplasty has been performed, the patient has to keep their head raised and minimally mobile. And they also have to stay clear, for a several weeks, of all tasks that may require more than a small amount of movement.
Some preparation on your part:
A nose job or rhinoplasty may be a relatively small plastic surgery, but it must be taken seriously nevertheless. Before you go ahead with your procedure, make sure your medical insurance covers the costs, especially if you’re doing it for merely aesthetic reasons. This procedure can literally change your life, and increase your self-confidence in a way you never thought it could happen.
