Medical tourism. Scar surgery.

Scars that appear as a consequence of different types of traumatisms can create psychical complexes due to the unaesthetic aspect that might affect both life and activity. Moreover, scars appeared as a result of different eruptive diseases or cutaneous infections appeared during puberty may have similar results. Often, the make up does not succeed in hiding the affected areas. Many people resign themselves in considering that these marks represent a benefic personal mark. Others do not succeed in believing it and search for other methods in hiding and removing them.

Friends and family members may present to you their opinion on this procedure and the plastic surgeon is the one to give all medical recommendations, but you are the only one to decide what is best for you.

Both women and men that are unpleased by their face and neck aspect can benefit from this intervention. This kind of procedure can be accomplished in two ways: excision and closure of the flaw through several proceedings (direct suture, for linear scars and small ones, Z-plasty, tissue flaps and tissue graft in the case of deformed scars) derma-abrasion for large scars or situated in difficulty accessible areas. Derma-abrasion is not used to remove congenital pigmentation or as a follow up of hormonal therapy, or tattoos. It is forbidden to proceed with dermabrasion on active acne, herpetic eruption or irradiation treatment.
The final results of derma-abrasion are variable according to skin type, color, scar characteristics and depth of pigmentation. Thus, colored people and Asians will have after derma-abrasion de-pigmented areas and the individuals with pathological scarring can produce keloids. If you are unsatisfied by your face’s aspect this operation offers new possibilities for getting a new look.

The aim of this intervention is the even the possible tegumentary irregularities in different regions. Derma-abrasion can be performed on small areas, large ones on the entire face. The intervention is performed with an abrasive tool connected to an engine. With this tool the plastic surgeon polishes the skin and removes the irregularities and prominences. This surgical intervention can be performed in one movement or more when the scars are large and of great depth. After the surgery, bandaging can be made through several methods: ointment, fat tuel, dry treatment or the combination of the above.

The surgical intervention is performed under general anesthetic because it is the safest and it assures operative comfort to the surgical team. The anesthetic risks are diminished by the administration of the general anesthetic but this cannot be completely removed. Expose to the plastic surgeon your medical history in order to establish the proceedings of the surgical intervention. In some situations the surgical intervention can take place under local potentate anesthetic. The necessary time to perform derma-abrasion depends on several factors including scar surface, the complexity of the intervention, the depth of scars, the anesthetic type. Usually, the surgical intervention takes about 1 to 3 hours. Most derma-abrasions take a 1 to 2 days postoperative hospitalization, in order to be under medical care after surgery.

Some possible complications are the following: bleeding, infection, anesthetic allergy, hypertrophic and keloid scars. Follow the plastic surgeon’s indications in order to avoid any complications.

The postoperative effects are blemish and face swelling as well as low intensity pain. Face swelling is significantly reduced after a few days. Sensitivity disorders may appear: itching, burning feeling. Talking and eating may be difficult. The initial discomfort is controlled with pain control medication. On the abrasive area crusts will be formed and after their removal a pink tissue will appear and it must be cared with ointments. If you have a tendency to keloids and hypertrophic scars please consult your plastic surgeon. Work can be continued after 2-3 days. Pain may persist thus pain control pills should be given. Avoid alcohol, sauna, and pool steam baths for a couple of weeks and sunbathing for a couple of months. From the third week your face will look much better. The pink color will modify in time becoming normal again. Complete activity may be continued after 2-3 weeks according to the evolution of the surgery and the level of daily activity. The plastic surgeon will recommend the right time to resume activity.
